“Wait. Weren’t these Seiko, GS models mentioned here not too long ago?”
Yes, you’re right. However, this is the Malaysian preview so things are a little bit more… localized. For more details and tech specs on Seiko and Grand Seiko’s 2022 releases, we’ve covered them in an earlier story here and here. For now, we’re gonna’ be looking at the local release dates and recommended retail prices.
But before we do, Seiko and Grand Seiko distributor, Thong Sia, also mentioned that there will be another new boutique opening in the Klang Valley in the near future. Additionally, there was also a mention of more Thong Sia-exclusive limited editions coming our way. Best start saving, then.
“So, without further delay, let’s begin.”
With Seiko first, we have new models in the Prospex, Presage and Speedtimer range. The Prospex range sees three new models under the ‘Save the Ocean’ series. There’s the SPB297J1, SPB299J1 and the SPB301J1. These will be available towards the tail end of Q2 this year.
The Presage range sees a new limited edition GMT model alongside new open heart and multi-hand models. This year, we also see a new ‘Arita’ porcelain dialed variant. Two models are available, the SPB293J1 (white dial) and SPB319J1 (light blue dial).
These are scheduled to hit the shelves towards the end of Q2/start of Q3.
SPB303J1 (limited edition GMT)
SPB305J1, SPB307J1 (multi hand models)
SPB309J1, SPB311J1 (open hearts)
SPB293J1, SPB319J1 (‘Arita’ porcelain)
Last but not least, there’s a limited edition Prospex Speedtimer Mechanical Chronograph which was launched in conjunction with the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon. This one is limited to 400 units worldwide.
“And moving on to Grand Seiko…”
For 2022, the Evolution 9 collection takes center stage with five new models. We get the Spring Drive GMTs (SBGE283G and SBGE285G) which are priced at roughly RM36,000 and the Spring Drive Chrono GMTs (SBGC249G and SBGC251G) priced at around RM55,000 and RM48,000, respectively.

Then, there’s the SLGA015G diver which goes for around RM48,000.
I, however, found myself drawn to the dress pieces. Grand Seiko Malaysia has also showcased the SBGW289G, SBGW291G and SBGW293G. All three carry an estimated price tag of RM23,000 and RM22,000 for the latter two. The 289 is set to go on sale in June 2022. The other pair, however, will debut later on in September.
Now, in case you’re wondering as to why we have live photos of some models but not all the ones mentioned, Thong Sia has, for reasons unknown to us, disallowed the media to photograph specific models. No idea why.* Once again, we’ve covered these models in an earlier story so if you want the full specs and press photos, head on over here.
*EDIT: According to the higher-ups and their reps, each model has its own public disclosure date (embargo, basically) and because some of them aren’t even listed on Seiko Japan’s site yet, no one from the media end is allowed to photograph these models.
